Recently, VSRN has had a higher than usual number of requests for help with post-refractive surgery vision issues, most of which will require expertly fitted rigid gas permeable prosthetic contact lenses to regain acceptable vision. The number of expert fitters around the globe is miniscule, as fitting rigid lenses of any kind is fast becoming a lost art.
Patients invariably experience sticker shock at the high cost of rehab and occasionally misdirect their anger at the experts trying to help them. Instead, they ought to be directing their anger at their surgeons and demanding refunds for the expensive elective surgery that requires them to seek rehab options.
The amount of training and expertise required to do this kind of remedial work is extensive. Fitting a prosthetic lens, individually designed for each damaged cornea, is a complex and time-consuming process. The irregular surface of the cornea requires a certain amount of trial and error to achieve the best lens fit and acuity. These are no ordinary, off-the-shelf lenses, and the amount of chair time spent by the doctor at each fitting may be equivalent to three ordinary appointments. (No doctor is happy losing income.) The lenses themselves may also be very pricey, depending on the kind and the lab manufacturing them.
VSRN has been recruiting expert fitters for more than 10 years. Finding one is akin to discovering a flawless diamond, and like a rare gem, the expert who is both willing and able to help our patients commands a premium price.
We are the ONLY organization in the world that does what we do to help patients needing rehab options and we do it at no charge to anyone and with no other reward beyond the satisfaction of being able to help someone in need. We make every attempt to help every person who asks for help, but the decision on whether to move forward, or not, is entirely up to the patient.
