I was hoping someone could tell how long I could conceivably expect to be able to wear my RGPs. I started wearing them last year, at 31 years old and must wear them to correct my irregular astigmatism that resulted from my LASIK last year. I have been wearing them about 6 months.

Would it be possible to wear RGPs for the next 40 years? What are the possible long term complications? What should I expect? I am an accountant and spend a lot of time doing very up close work and am on a computer most of the day.

Thanks, LongIsland

I have patients in their 90's still wearing HGP lenses comfortably. Every single patient is different so there is no way to predict. Just take good care of the lenses and continue with routine follow up appointments. Good Luck.

My record is 40 years, and we converted him to Ortho-K last year.

As long as there are no physiological issues, there is no set time limit, and these days with RGP, it is entirely feasible that one could safely wear lenses for 60, 70, 80 years with total safety due to the high oxygen permeability of the lens materials.
