Hello - my surgeon wrote me script for alphagan drops to hopefully counteract some of my starbursts, halos etc. I get at night (from post RS). He said that it should not hurt my soft lenses even if I put the drops in when the lenses are in.

Also, my OD said that since I wear the 2-week disposable soft lenses, it's just as likely I will reduce wear time by continually taking out the lenses a few extra times each day in order to put the drops in - ie - just go ahead and put the drops in while the lenses are in because I shouldn't notice anything before I dispose of the lenses in 2 weeks anyway.

I AM JUST CURIOUS THE DOCTORS EXPERIENCES WITH GIVING THEIR PATIENTS ALPHAGAN? ANY ADVICE?
Thanks,
mike

Hi Mike,
Alphagan is preserved with benzalkonium which is toxic to the corneal epithelium so I wouldn't use it with cls. However, alphagan-P is preserved with purite, a much less potent preservative and should be safe to use with contacts. Make sure you get the alphagan-P (same active ingredient-just the different preservative)

Although BAK is what gives the alphagan the increased efficacy.

The major factor is more to do with the time span the Alphagan is to be used over. If it is for occasional use, or for a month or two, I would use it with no qualmns, however if this is planned as a long term option to be used with CL's, then the combined toxic effect with reduced oxygen and corneal mitosis may cause problems to an already compromised cornea.

I see that it is Alphagan P from another post. THis should be fine for your CL's.
