I had PRK sugery in 1995. Since then I have ha d problems in low light- any light without intense artificial light - I have extreme face pain in low light which starts at the rear of my jaw (either side not simultaneously) and resonates along teeth, cheekbone, back and shoulder. I have already been told that there is enough scarring in my left eye to make looking at anything in lower light like looking thr a 'misty window' Can you give me any advise on what help I could ask for from the opthomologist - as I generally seem to be 'batted' off by baffled experts.

ps I also asked the first opthamologist I saw if contact lenses might help as I instinctively feel that if my vision was enhanced in lower lighting -ie. the contrast sensitivity was lessened then the pain may ease. He says there is no way contact lenses could help - it this true?

Sorry this did not get answered sooner.

"I have already been told that there is enough scarring in my left eye to make looking at anything in lower light like looking thr a 'misty window'."

If the problem is associated with low light, as in so many other patients where their pupil size exceeds the ablation diameter, then by all means consider an RGP lens to see if your vision can be improved. The "misty window" effect, however, cannot be addressed with a contact lens.

While it does not seem like pain relief would be a direct benefit, the fact that low light brings on the symptoms suggests optical factors are contributing. Ten years is a long time to be symptomatic. I suggest you find an RGP fitter with experience in post-PRK lens work.
