I had lasik in 1999 and an enhancement in 2000. Original doc cut a brand new flap for the enhancements. Every year, my eyes have regressed. I'm now at -1.5 for each eye and residual astigmatism of -.75. Second opinion doctors don't know why, possibly due to 25 yr + of wearing hard contacts. Otherwise cornea looks ok.
I have tried soft contacts but the vision is so-so. Would like to try RGP's. But about 2 years ago, one of my doctors told me he would kill me if I tried RGP lenses. Never asked him why. Any ideas why?

I have an idea. That doctor is an idiot, just like the original LASIK doctor who cut a 2nd flap. Go see a skilled RGP fitter.

I don't know why. You certainly can't keep cutting new flaps and re-ablating so it comes down to how you choose to correct YOUR vision - glasses or contact lenses. Unless you had a very mild degree of myopia, soft lenses usually prove of limited value.

I don't like the term regression. It fails to address the mechanism of change in refraction. Is the change in your case related to prior hard contact lens wear, natural myopic progression or the slight myopic shift common in pre-presbyopia? It could be a combination of all these.

If your doctor fears the use of RGPs post-LASIK, then he is clearly unaware of their use in these circumstances. Many times, an RGP is the only way to provide clear vision.

There is no reason not to get RGP lenses. Your doctor must be trying to get you to pay for more surgery????

RGP lenses may not only give you restored vision, but may well prevent the further deterioration of your prescription.

RGP lenses touch the cornea in the periphery, not near the flap region, they provide high levels of oxygen and restore a regular shape to the cornea to provide quality vision.

Even after 25 years of hard/RGP lens wear, there should be no contra-indication to RGP wear.

I would like to hear why the doctor said this.
