My vision was -9.5 diopters in both eyes, when the RK procedure was performed in my left eye in 1984, by a famous eye surgeon, my' own ophthalmologist for 20 years. The result was poor. Irregular astigmatism was created in addition to a +2 refracted vision. I did not dare to proceed with surgery on my right eye, considering the hard lesson learned. It should be mentioned that I was susceptible to ifftis, add to it a strong nearsighted vision, I now know that I should not have been considered a candidate for RK.
The impact on the quality of my life, my career, by the unmatched vision over the years is profound. I am now almost 70 years old, physically quite fit, but I am daily reminded of that unfortunate decision that was made in total trust so many years ago. I now have developed cataracts, more in the RK eye, and the eye surgeons I have consulted are hesitant to perform intra ocular lens implants. The left eye, they say, should get a cornea transplant before the lens replacement. Once those two procedures are done, we will know the outcome and then the "good" eye can be also operated on. With other words, we want to avoid risking, small as it might be, the only good eye I now have. I found you on the Internet while looking for specialists for cornea transplants and was struck by the fact that this option was not mentioned in any of your articles, except under irregular astigmatism where it was stated that cornea transplant can introduce irregular astigmatism. I am aware of the fact that you do not provide recommendations, but if there is anybody who can guide me in my decision as to what to do, I will be forever grateful.
