I had a -7 prescription with moderate astigmatism. More importantly, I have 7-8 mm pupils in less than bright light. Prior to surgery, I asked my prominent LASIK surgeon operating at a well-known laser center specifically about my large pupils and she told me "no problem." I am now 4 months post-op and I have serious problems. Not only do I have horrendous night glare, but I also have constantly cloudy vision indoors and wherever light is dim (my daytime outdoor vision is fine). As an article in the June issue of Consumer Reports says, "The risk [of bad outcomes] also increases substantially when the pupils are larger than 5 millimeters..." and "too many surgeons are neglecting" the large pupil problem. I have heard of virtually no one with large pupils getting clear indoor vision, but MANY who have had lousy outcomes. Please, learn from my mistake: If you have pupils larger than the laser ablation zone (roughly 6mm), do NOT have the surgery. |
