If I were able to make the decision to have LASIK today, knowing the end results and the statistics of possible side effects, I most definitely wouldn't do it. The intended use of the disclaimer is to cover liability of the surgeon and not to inform the patient of the likelihood of ending up with any number of side effects. The initial advertising quoting testimonials from people who claim to have 20 20 vision and no problems after LASIK is misleading and deceptive. My only link to reality on the procedure was from internet websites After having LASIK on Sept 23 1998, I am wearing bifocals as I did before only less thick. I started out with a refraction of -8.5 and -11 with astigmatism in both eyes. I ended up with -.5 and -1.25 in the right eye, undercorrected for monovision. Side effects from my surgery include ghosting, starbursts, and lack of clarity in low light. I also have dry eyes, which may be worse than before surgery. Daytime vision is the same as before and night vision has been compromised. My end result is considered to be a success by my doctor and both of us agreed not to try for an enhancement. I realize my side effects are minor compared to many people and I do feel lucky to be doing as well as I am. I just would like to see statistics on side effects added to the disclaimer to enable patients to make a more informed decision. Libby McQuiston |
