I had PRK in one eye one week ago. The doctor removed the lens two days ago. With the lens in I had good close-up vision. With the lens out I have poor close-up vision. I realize the PRK can take weeks to heal. I called the doc and asked if it would cause problems to put a lens back in. She didn't think so but from her tone I get the impression she doesn't like the idea.

Is there a risk to using a contact after PRK? I have a bunch of plano Focus Night and Day lenses that I never opened when I was trying to piggyback with RGP lenses.

Was your distance vision worse with the lens than without it? It is possible the "bandage" lens they gave you might have had some plus power to it.

The vision was significantly better with the lens in. She used a plano Focus Night and Day lens. With the lens in it restored my close focus. She said this was because it created a smooth surface, just like hard lenses do. This is helpful to me but I still wonder about how it might affect corneal healing and remodeling.

It's 8 days now since the PRK. The discomfort is now in one upper lateral corner only. It isn't even really discomfort. If feels more llke I've been wearing a hard contact lens for too long.

koneall,
what is the problem with close-up vision?
Is it blurry or ghosted or both?
My close-up vision improved 2 weeks after PRK, and again after 4.5 weeks to the functional level.

The vision is blurry but no ghosts. If I put the soft lens in the distance vision is very good and the close vision is okay. Without the lens I doubt I could see the big "E" on an eye chart.

What was your prescription in glasses before the most recent PRK?

I don't know what the prescription was but I was quite farsighted.

I know your history is complicated. My only sense here is that before, after having myopic LASIK, you were left with myopic spherical aberrations which could possibly help reading a little. Whereas now, following hyperopic PRK, you may have hyperopic spherical aberrations.

In any case, it is still early in your recovery. Hopefully some of this will improve.
