I had Wavefront surgery on 9/29/06 to treat Near sightedness along with Astygmatism. Unfortunately, I opted to have both eyes done together. I had a severe DLK reaction 2 days following the operation in my right eye. The doctor flushed both eyes on the 3rd day as the Left eye was showing signs of DLK as well. The right eye reacted well to the irrigation and is now the better of the 2. I am currently taking Pred Forte 3 times a day and Xibrom 2 times a day. My left cornea has dramatically flattened. The doctor has scheduled my next visit for 1 month from now, which would be about 6-7 weeks from original surgery. Should I seek a 2nd opinion immediately or wait until more healing occurs? Is there anything I should be concerned about outside of the flattening? Can you recommend a specialist in the Chicago area?

Barbara,
Thank you again for all of your help. You found me when I needed someone desperately and Dr. Foulke will be bringing me the rest of the way. I will be in touch with you as time goes by to keep you up on my progress. We are looking at a long road to recovery, 2-3 years, and I'm certain I will have many more questions as time progresses. I truly want to thank you for taking the time and effort to reach out to a total stranger and literally help lead me out of the darkness. Sincerely, Mike |

What is the difference between DLK and Central Toxic Keratopathy?
A doctor who has reviewed my records, but has not personally seen me, has diagnosed my complication as Central Toxic Keratopathy. My current doctor's diagnosis is Stage IV DLK. Is there a fundamental difference between the 2? I believe that my current doctor is correct, but would like further clarification on the differences. |

Michael, I emailed you the article on Central Toxic Keratopathy in two parts today.
The main difference in symptoms seems to be that the CTK is accompanied by a distinct hyperopic shift. Stage IV DLK generally scars the cornea, causing haze that does not resolve, while CTK resolves on its own, albeit over rather a long period, leaving hyperopia that supposedly can be retreated with further surgical intervention later.
