I went to an ophthalmologistfor dry eyes. He reported this condition as the cpt (?) code on my insurance forms. How is this different from plain old dry eyes?
http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=6040 Definition of Xerophthalmia Xerophthalmia: Dry eyes. Xerophthalmia can be associated with systemic diseases such as Sjögren' s syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, sarcoidosis, amyloidosis, and hypothyroidism; deficiency of vitamin A; and the use of some medications including antihistamines, nasal decongestants, tranquilizers, and anti-depressant drugs. Xerophthalmia results from inadequate function of the lacrimal glands which produce tears. When xerophthalmia is due to vitamin A deficiency, the condition begins with night blindness and conjunctival xerosis (dryness of the eye membranes) and progresses to corneal xerosis (dryness of the cornea), and, in the late stages, to keratomalacia (softening of the cornea). The treatment depends on the cause. Artificial tears, which lubricate the eye, are the principal symptomatic treatment for dry eye. They are available over-the-counter as eye drops. Using humidifiers, wearing wrap-around glasses when outside, and avoiding outside windy and dry conditions may bring relief. For people with severe cases of dry eye, temporary or permanent closure of the tear drain (small openings at the inner corner of the eyelids where tears drain from the eye) may be helpful. Also known as conjunctivitis arida. The word "xerophthalmia" is apt. It comes from the Greek "xeros" (dry) + "ophthalmos" (eye) = dry eye. This message has been edited.
