Thank you Dr. Hartzok for your reply to my question re. removal of contac lenses before lasik. I have more questions.
After removal of the lenses before lasik, does the surgeon re-check your eye to make sure the cornea is back to its pre-operative state? How do you tell whether it is or is not? IF it is not and refractive surgery is performed, what are the possible complications?

Thank you.

The pre-operative state is not always knowable but consistency/repeatability of the corneal curvature measurements and the spectacle refraction following discontinuation of contact lens use is acceptable. The longer lenses are discontinued, the more likely a stable baseline is assured.

If a stable baseline is not achieved prior to surgery, than the refractive error being treated with surgery is incorrect and the end result would be an over or under correction. Of course, a successful visual outcome from refractive surgery is not just about treating these lower order aberrations accurately. Other factors are present that can overshadow the pre-operative stability of the refraction.
