Fuzzy,

Topographers and aberrometers are good at demonstrating problems with the cornea and vision. When the corneal surface is highly irregular, the only consistent means to restore vision quality is with RGPs. What was your experience to date?

I have tried wearing RGP's on (3) different occassions; being fitted by a different optometrist with each attempt. I have (1) pair of reverse geometry RGP's and (2) different pairs of Z-Wave RGP's. I also had been fitted with spectacle overcorrection, tifocals with each pair of RGP's. The results were mixed; experienced significant aesthenopia.

Dear Fuzzy;

Has anyone ever suggested scleral lenses? I have worked with many post-surgical patients and have found that scleral lenses work very well with a high percentage of these patients, especially when dryness is an issue.

None of the Eye Care Profressionals over the years have recommended scleral lenses. I believe I brought up the subject back in the fall of 2001 with an optometrist at a University of Califonria campus. He showed me a case of trial lenses, then stated they were very expensive to fit and advised against purchasing them. PLEASE REVIEW THE TOPOGRAPHY OF MY LEFT EYE I POSTED EARLIER. It's causing me the most problem(s).

DR Boshnick - Are these scleral lenses the same as the lenses that are used for patients who have undergone glaucoma operations? I asked my optician about scleral lenses as everything lens wise is failing me - she gave me some lenses which she said would be the same. They were huge! They covered the white of my eye too. They were not tolerable. If the scleral lens is different can you tell me how - also how much does it usually cost? Available in the UK?
